When Your Heart Feels Heavy

A gentle read-aloud story for little ones — even on sunny days

Have you ever felt sad even when the sun was shining?

Maybe it was a summer day — bright and warm and long — and everyone else seemed happy. But something inside you felt heavy. Like a little cloud sitting right in your chest. You didn’t know exactly why. You just felt it.

That happens sometimes. And that’s okay.

Here is something very important that the Bible tells us:

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

“Nigh” is an old word. It means very, very close — like right beside you.

So the Bible is saying: when your heart feels heavy or sad, God does not stay far away. He moves close. He sees the heavy feeling. He is right there with you, even when no one else can see it.

Jesus had a friend named Lazarus who died, and all the people around him were crying. Do you know what Jesus did? The Bible says something very short and very important:

“Jesus wept.” — John 11:35 (KJV)

Jesus cried too. Right there with the people who were sad. He was not far away, telling everyone to cheer up. He sat down in the sadness with them.

He will sit in the sadness with you too.

You can talk to Him about how you feel. You don’t need big, fancy words. You can just say: “God, my heart feels heavy today. Will You stay close?”

He will. He promised.

For the grown-up reading aloud: After the story, you might ask your child, “Has your heart ever felt heavy like that? What did it feel like?” There are no wrong answers. Just listening is enough. If they want to pray, keep it simple — one honest sentence is more than enough.

Let’s Talk About the Story

Choose the best answer. If it’s not quite right, you’ll get a gentle hint.

1. In the story, how did the child’s heart feel on the sunny summer day?

2. What does the word “nigh” mean in Psalm 34:18?

3. What did Jesus do when his friends were crying at the tomb of Lazarus?

4. What can you say to God when your heart feels heavy?

5. According to what we learned today, when your heart feels sad, what does God do?

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.” — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

God is close to your heart today — even when it feels heavy. You are not alone.

I sat with this
“The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy.” — Zephaniah 3:17 (KJV)

You are not alone.
