Contentment in Little

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” — Philippians 4:11-13

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

The story / setting

Paul wrote from prison, not from comfort. He had known hunger and plenty. Contentment was learned over time—through Christ’s strength, not through pretending circumstances were fine.

The lesson learned

Contentment is not denial. It is trusting Christ in both want and abundance, without letting either define our peace.

How it applies today

Comparison steals joy. A tight budget, a smaller house, a season of less—Paul still found strength in Christ rather than in circumstances.

How to prepare the heart

Name one gift today before naming one lack.
Fast from comparison for one day—no scrolling envy, if that is your battle.
Memorize slowly: “I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”
