Courage for Hard Days
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” — Joshua 1:9
Courage is not the absence of fear—it is walking with God into the next step.
The Scripture (Joshua 1:9)
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
The story / setting
Moses was gone. Joshua faced a nation to lead and a land to enter. God did not pretend the task was small. He commanded courage rooted in one truth: I am with you wherever you go.
The lesson learned
God does not shame trembling hearts. He commands strength and courage because He goes with us—not because the road is easy.
How it applies today
A hard conversation, a new school, a medical test, showing up for family when you feel small inside—courage is often one obedient step while afraid.
How to prepare the heart
- Name the fear out loud to God; then speak Joshua 1:9 slowly.
- Take one small brave action today (a call, an apology, a boundary).
- With children: “God is with us when we feel scared.”
Quiet reflection (optional)
- What is the next step God is asking me to take, even while afraid?
- Where have I seen Him with me in a hard place before?
For little ones
Tell David and Goliath briefly—God was bigger than the giant. Color courage scenes.
