God saw—and was not indifferent

But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

What was going on
Parents bring little children to Jesus; the disciples rebuke them; Jesus is much displeased and welcomes the children into His arms.
What it means
But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said to them, Suffer the little children to come to me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
Jesus wanted children near Him. Harm to the vulnerable is not a small matter in His sight.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
In simpler words
Let it not seem to you that one of these little ones is of no value; for I say to you that in heaven their angels see at all times the face of my Father in heaven.
What was going on
In Capernaum Jesus teaches humility with a child in their midst and warns against despising little ones whose angels behold the Father’s face.
What it means
Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones; for I say to you, That in heaven their angels do always look the face of my Father which is in heaven.
What was done was seen in heaven. The Father has not looked away.

LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.
What was going on
The psalmist asks why the Lord stands afar off while the wicked hunt the poor, then trusts that God hears the desire of the humble.
What it means
LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble: you will prepare their heart, you will cause yours ear to hear: To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.
The humble are heard. Justice for the oppressed belongs to the Lord.
When the heart has carried this a long time
KJV
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
What was going on
David, after escaping Abimelech, teaches: the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those of a contrite spirit.
What it means
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Near means close—not waiting for you to compose yourself first.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
What was going on
Hallelujah: the Lord heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds; He counts the stars and feeds His people.
What it means
God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Binding takes time. Healing is His work, not a deadline for you.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
What was going on
When the Philistines took David in Gath, he says: what time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee — God bottles every tear.
What it means
You tellest my wanderings: put you my tears into your bottle: are they not in your book?
Every tear is counted—yours and theirs.
KJV
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
In simpler words
It is through the Lord's love that we have not come to destruction, because his mercies have no limit.
What was going on
Jerusalem has fallen; the poet weeps, yet hopes in mercies new every morning.
What it means
God's love never runs out; His compassion is new every morning.
Some mornings the weight is the first thing you meet. Mercy meets you there too.
When shame whispers “it was my fault”
KJV
But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
In simpler words
But now, says the Lord your Maker, O Jacob, and your life-giver, O Israel: have no fear, for I have taken up your cause; naming you by your name, I have made you mine.
What was going on
The Lord names and redeems His people: Fear not, for I have redeemed thee; I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
What it means
But now thus says the LORD that created you, O Jacob, and he that formed you, O Israel, Do not be afraid: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; you are mine.
Abuse does not get the final say on who you are. Called. Named. His.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What was going on
Paul teaches believers in Rome about life in the Spirit: no condemnation, adoption, and God working all things for good for those who love Him.
What it means
Nothing can separate us from God's love—not trouble, not death, nothing.
Not what happened. Not shame. Not time. Love in Christ is not undone.

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
In simpler words
The Lord your God is among you, as a strong saviour: he will be glad over you with joy, he will make his love new again, he will make a song of joy over you as in the time of a holy feast.
What was going on
The day of the Lord is near; a humble remnant will trust the Lord and rejoice.
What it means
The LORD your God in the midst of you is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over you with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over you with singing.
You do not have to feel glad yet. He rests in His love toward you anyway.
For parents and the ones who stayed

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort;
What was going on
Paul said this to the church at Corinth in affliction: God of all comfort.
What it means
God is the Father of compassion and the One who comforts us in our troubles.
Your long faithfulness beside them is real ministry. Comfort received is not wasted.

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.
In simpler words
Will a woman give up the child at her breast, will she be without pity for the fruit of her body? yes, these may, but I will not let you go out of my memory.
What was going on
The Lord’s servant is a light to the nations; Zion feels forgotten, yet God says He will not forget His people.
What it means
Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, they may forget, yet will I not forget you. Look, I have graven you upon the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
He has not forgotten your child—even when the years feel endless.
Say plainly, as often as needed: It was not your fault. You are safe now. I love you. I believe you. Those words matter as much as any reference.
When hope feels far away

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound… to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness…

What was going on
Zion’s light and the Spirit of the Lord on the anointed to bind up the brokenhearted and proclaim liberty.
What it means
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound… to comfort all that mourn; to appoint to them that mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness….
Beauty for ashes is a long promise—not pressure to feel better by Friday.

What was going on
Christ returns; new heaven and new earth; the river of life; “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”.
What it means
One day God will wipe away every tear; no more death, grief, or pain.
Today’s tears are real. This is the horizon Scripture holds out.
When it hits hardest
- When memories surface again — Psalm 34:18 needs no performance; sit with one verse.
- Milestones — dating, marriage, parenting your own children; Isaiah 43:1 for identity when the past whispers.
- Nights that will not quiet — Journal: when trust was broken or the When it's hard.
- When a friend asks how to help — share this page or one verse on a card; no sermon required.
Quiet cautions
- Do not rush forgiveness of the abuser. That is the Lord’s work in His time, often with professional help.
- Avoid Romans 8:28 here—survivors often hear it as “your pain served a purpose,” which can wound.
- Healing verses are not deadlines. “Over it by now” is not Scripture’s voice.
- If you or a child are in danger now, reach local child protective services, law enforcement, or a Child Advocacy Center—not only this page.
A Gentle Word
Psalm 34:18. He does not ask you to pull it together. He draws nigh. That is enough for today.
