Key Verses

Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Near means close—not waiting for you to compose yourself first.

Matthew 5:4 (KJV)

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Mourning is seen, not shamed, in the Sermon on the Mount.

Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

The ache is real now; this is the horizon Scripture holds out.

Psalm 147:3 (KJV)

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Binding takes time. Healing is His work, not a deadline for you.

John 14:18 (KJV)

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

When the house feels empty after loss, His promise is presence.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Some mornings grief is the first thing you meet. Mercy meets you there too.

Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Death does not undo love. Separation is not the last word.

When it hits hardest

  • After goodbye when ordinary tasks feel impossible—Psalm 34:18 needs no performance from you.
  • Anniversaries and empty chairs—Lamentations 3:22-23 for the morning that hurts again.
  • With children watching you grieve—one quiet verse at the table is enough; see After grief for family-paced days.

A Gentle Word

Psalm 34:18. He doesn't ask you to pull it together. He just gets close.
