Key Verses
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
Those with young are named gently—including you on the tired days.
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Ordinary rooms count—car line, bedtime, dishes.
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Nurture is the tone; admonition is truth held with care.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Faithfulness over years, not perfection in one afternoon.
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
Heritage holds on hard days too—when reward feels far away.
Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
Discouragement in a child’s eyes is worth pausing for.
But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus made room for littles in the middle of busy crowds.
When it hits hardest
- After bedtime battles—Isaiah 40:11 for the parent still standing in the hallway.
- When you snapped and guilt follows—Ephesians 6:4 and a quiet repair tomorrow; see Parent weary.
- With littles underfoot all day—Deuteronomy 6:7 in one sentence at lunch counts as teaching.
A Gentle Word
Some days you don't know what you're doing. Neither did most parents in Scripture. God knows that — and still gives wisdom to those who ask.
